Why ChatGPT isn't recommending your business

Seven real causes, in the order you should check them.

If ChatGPT names your competitors but never you, it is almost never because of size or budget. It is because their information is easier to find, easier to understand, or easier to trust than yours — and the answer goes to whichever business is easiest to describe confidently.

Here are the seven causes, starting with the most common.

Cause 1 — most common

Your website describes you in your own language, not your customers'

"Premium curated solutions for the discerning client" tells ChatGPT nothing about what you sell, to whom, or where. If a customer asks "where can I get a birthday cake in Philipsburg?", a bakery that only ever writes "artisanal patisserie experiences" will not match.

This is the single biggest reason small businesses are missing from AI answers. Not a technical problem — a wording problem.

Fix: Write, in plain sentences, what you sell, who for, and exactly where. Name the town and the island. Use the words a customer would type.
Cause 2

Your details contradict each other across sites

Your site says one phone number, Google says another, an old directory listing has your previous address. ChatGPT cannot confirm which version of your business is real, so it prefers a business with one clear version.

Fix: Pick the correct name, address and phone number. Then make every listing match, character for character. A "Suite 2" versus "#2" difference is small to you and noise to a machine.
Cause 3

There is information about you, but only from you

Your own website saying you are excellent is not corroboration. ChatGPT draws more confidently on a business that is described consistently by several independent sources — directories, local media, review sites, business associations.

Fix: Get listed accurately in the directories that matter in your market. Then earn a couple of genuine mentions — a local news piece, a supplier page, a business association listing.
Cause 4

Your information is out of date

Old prices, last season's opening hours, products you no longer stock. Stale information is worse than missing information, because it gets quoted confidently and then disproved when the customer arrives.

Fix: Update prices and hours on the source pages first — your own site and your Google Business Profile. Change the source, not the summary.
Cause 5

AI crawlers cannot read your pages

Sometimes the blocker is technical: a robots file that blocks AI crawlers, content that only appears after a script runs, or pages behind a login. Less common than the wording problems, but absolute when it happens — nothing else you fix will matter.

Fix: Ask whoever runs your site to confirm that public pages are readable without JavaScript, and that crawlers like OAI-SearchBot are not blocked.
Cause 6

You only answer one shape of question

Customers ask in several ways: by category ("a restaurant in Marigot"), by need ("somewhere open late near the airport"), by comparison ("X versus Y"), and by constraint ("under $50"). If your content only ever addresses the first, you are invisible to the rest.

Fix: Cover the same service from several angles — what it is, who it suits, what it costs, what makes you different, where exactly you do it.
Cause 7

Your site is new and simply hasn't been read yet

A brand-new domain is not yet well indexed. If your site went live recently, low visibility is expected rather than a fault — but it still needs the other six fixed while you wait.

Fix: Confirm your pages are indexed in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, then be patient. Crawling takes time; there is no shortcut.

Check in order. Causes 1 to 4 account for most missing businesses, and they cost nothing but time to fix. Start there before considering anything technical.

Common questions

Why does ChatGPT recommend my competitors but not me?

Usually because competitors have clearer, more consistent and more corroborated information online. ChatGPT can confirm what they do, where they are and what they charge. If your details are vague, contradictory or only stated in your own marketing language, there is nothing confident to quote — so a competitor who is easier to describe gets named instead.

Does ChatGPT only recommend big businesses?

No. Size matters less than clarity. A small business with a clear website, a complete Google Business Profile and consistent details across directories can be named ahead of a larger competitor whose information is scattered or out of date.

How long does it take to fix ChatGPT visibility?

Fixing the underlying information can be done in days, but ChatGPT reflecting it depends on re-crawling, which varies. Some changes appear within a week, others take longer. No provider can give a guaranteed date.
